The Greenhouse of “Useful” Plants

 

In the proximity of the exposition area of “useful plants” there are two greenhouses. They were built because of the need to cultivate species particularly noted for their products of common use which were unable to survive out in the open during the winter season.

The hot-humid greenhouse is characterized by a minimum temperature of 18° and a humidity level of 85-90%. Among the species cultivated here are coffee (Coffea arabica), cocoa (Theobroma cacao), coconut (Cocus nucifera), vanilla (Vanilla planifolia), pepper (Piper nigrum), banana –tree (Musa x paradisiaca) and the mahogany tree (Swietenia mahogany).

The hot/-dry greenhouse is characterized by a high temperature and a low level of  humidity, it holds various species among which are incense (Boswellia carterii), mirrh (Commiphora sp.), the peyote (Lophophora williamsii), and the pitaya (Hylocereus undatus).
