The castle is a building that dates back to the 16th or 17th century and that has been incorporated  into the Botanical Garden since the foundation of this institution. It is characterized by a square structure each side measuring 32 metres and with battlemented towers in each corner. For quite a while, and until the new Botanic Institute was formed, this structure was the head office for didactic activities and the laboratory, the museum, the herbarium and the library were situated here. At present this building is the centre of both the technical and administrative activities of the Garden and has offices, a laboratory, and the Paleobotanic and Ethnobotanic Museum.
